Where Vennox has restraint, I'm afraid I'm sorely lacking. I'd like to talk about The Dark Knight. In my defence though, I'd argue that it deserves to be talked about. Whilst the film doesn't skimp on thrilling action sequences, it would be unfair to dismiss it as lacking in substance. The film deals with morality as much as muscles, and the questions it brings up - in my opinion - are genuinely intriguing. Read more

I now know 75 kanji, 46 hiragana, and 46 katakana. This means that I now officially know more than six times as many Japanese characters as English ones. And every week, I'm learning ten more. I wonder if there is a way of quantifying the rate of learning – in the sense of pure memorisation - and what my maximum is? It's so satisfying to learn things, and to be good at them. And it's such a pity that over time we lose our edge in the same areas. In any case: Kanji are fun, so that's good. :) Read more

Ha! Today is a good day, for I have beaten QuickTime with a big stick. Not work will you? Crash my browser and fail to uninstall cleanly? I threw it down to the ground, shot it with an AK, and then made it eat boot. Also I found a nifty codecs pack that works well with Vista, aptly named Vista Codec Package. Read more

Yesterday I went to see The Lord of the Rings, the musical, in the West End. First of all, I've got to say I loved it. It seems that in almost any form, Tolkien's original fantasy totally captures me, and I'm still unabashedly in love with the entire world, mythology and story. Film comparisons are fairly inevitable, but not really very important, so I'll steer clear of comparing how "good" they are. Read more

Latest comment by spikey : Yeah, the film rocked. Plus it had Geoffrey Rush (Barbosa) as JaVere!

It's official, Pirates of the Caribbean pwns. It may not deliver on meaningful, life-changing content, but what it does give you is two hours and forty-five minutes of pure entertainment. Apricot flavour. Read more

I went to see Spiderman on Friday (DeTeReR didn't come because he sucks!). I don't think it's quite on par with the quality of Spiderman 2, but it's by no means a bad film. At close to two and a half hours, and with not one, not two, but three supervillians, you definitely feel as if director Sam Raimi decided that "bigger and better" was the way to go. Read more
